In this episode (after James pours a massive Jack'n'Coke) the guys ease into things by briefly discussing what they've been working on... Kevin slips on the developer management shoes, as the WP Ninjas trial a potential hire. Kenny learns from his coding philosophy mistakes on a big project. (Spoiler: Communication saved the day.) Jon gets support savvy, while beginning to march to the beat of JavaScript. While James has been figure-heading support, piercing issues like spearfishing goblin sharks right in their ugly mugs. Then as a special treat for you, the crew delivers a double-feature, two topic episode!

Support

  • Breaking down WP Ninjas renewed focus on support.
    • The immediate (monetary) fruits of that labor.
    • The near instant change in customer tone.
  • "As support goes, so to does sales."

Hiring

  • Best practices.
  • Biggest mistakes.
  • How we think about hiring.
  • When do you hire?
    • How do you know it’s the right time.
  • Have you properly budgeted for a new hire?
  • It’s all about “Attitude, then aptitude.”
  • Ask yourself the following about your potential hire...
    • “Do they get it, do they want it, do they have the capacity to do it?”
  • Hire for the person, not the position.
  • How you can apply this to your company.

FYI: This episode contains explicit language. While we would love you to listen and get your feedback, you do so at your own undetermined peril. FYI Part II: This is a sneak peek of what the podcast may be. We are still learning our equipment, format, and chemistry. Also, this site has yet to actually be built. 😜 img_2555 Welcome to episode zero of the Adventures in Businessing podcast. As the site title suggests, at it's highest level, this show is all about the adventures that come in building and running a business. At a more focused level, it's a show about two business partners. One an entrepreneur and the other an engineer. Together they currently build WordPress plugins like Ninja Forms. Where this adventure takes them is anyone's guess. You don't have to though. You can eavesdrop in on every episode. 🤘🏼 We hope you enjoy!

In this episode we start by going round robin and covering our favorite/most used applications, why they're great, and where you can get them. We also take a deep dive into the bold topic of "When Shit Hits the Fan"
  • What do you do when things go awry? ...and it will.
  • Intuition is key.
    • Being proactive before it's too late.
    • Crisis begets crisis.
  • Empathy: the value of having it and receiving it in the product space.
    • Honesty
    • Clarity
    • Why it's ok to feel bad.
Finally, we wrap up with a new segment - 'Kenny Knows Cars', as Kenny attempts to make value judgements of people who drive specific models of cars that James, Kevin, and Jon name at random.
  • Spoiler: apparently Kenny thinks most car drivers are murderers?

In this episode we have a in-depth discussion on all the ins and outs, and the good and bad of developing or running your business on open source software. While we love open source and it is the cornerstone of our own business, it is not without it's challenges. All in all though, the good far outweighs the bad. We also wrap up with a little on how you can contribute to the open source ecosystem with some of the ways we do so on a regular basis. Resources Mentioned:

This is an experiment in segments. In today's episode, instead of talking about a specific topic and sharing our thoughts and insights, we decided to have a brainstorming session about streamlining support. Each in fact just became us talking about ideas we have to improve support in our own business and some nods to what others are doing. The beginning of the year can be a heavy support time for many companies and perhaps it's a little late to actually be proactive in this very moment. The next dip is coming though so what do you plan to do during the slow times to prepare for the more hectic one? Resources Mentioned:

In episode 4 you can definitely tell that the crew is getting more comfortable and finding their voice. This was a great episode where we all share some of favorite resources for keeping up to date in our industry as well as dig into why James & Kevin chose to keep the WP Ninjas as an in-office team versus hiring a more distributed team. We share some of the in-office dynamics of our own space along with some of the challenges. Regardless of which option you choose, it should be based on the values and goals of your company. There may be lots of wrong ways to build a team, but there is definitely no right way. Resources Mentioned:

A great round up episode or our favorite things to listen to currently. It's a great mix of business, development, and entertainment resources that you might want to add to your own playlists. In this episode we also welcome a new member to the show, Kenny Hall. Introduced through a new segment we call Meet a Ninja, Kenny is a Junior Developer with the WP Ninjas. We're so glad he was able to joins and he will be missed. Resources Mentioned:

We're still getting used to our equipment and the idea of podcasting in this episode where we cover topics like exploring minimalism, what we're working on, moving everything into WordPress, moving everything back out, and the transition from Engineer/Entrepreneur to Manager/Coach. This is actually the third of a build of episodes that we recorded all in one week. I'm really glad we tried this approach. While we might have improved from this episode over the course of a few weeks, we were able to accelerate this process into one single week of recording. I believe that each week were are getting better and finding our voice and our format. All in all? We're really enjoying this adventure in podcasting just as much as businessing. :) Resources Mentioned:

If we're not careful it can be easy to go into the year without a plan. Not just those resolutions to lose weight or take up a hobby. Those are important, but what are your plans for your business in the coming year. How about the next 5 to 10 years? Are your goals this year setting up the next few for success? We discuss all of that and more in our first episode of the year. We also dig into some of our podcasting & personal goals as well as share some of the specific objectives we have for the coming year. This episode is jam packed with the knowledge that everyone falls short, but the real failure is in doing nothing at all.We hope you enjoy and check out some of the resources we mentioned in the links below.
